Light and position
Full sun: 6 or more hours of direct sun.
Size and pot
NC State lists plants 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, so give it a large pot or grow bag. Our pot band: large pot (more than 15 litres).
Watering
Keep the soil moist; poor drainage causes root rot.
Potting mix and feeding
Well-drained mix rich in organic matter.
Growing through the year
A warm-season crop. NC State says to sow outdoors only when soil stays above 55 °F (about 13 °C), and to pick pods at about 3 inches (7.5 cm), roughly four months after sowing. The pod hairs can irritate skin, so wear gloves.
NC State’s vegetable handbook says warm-season vegetables are frost-sensitive and grow well when temperatures are above about 21 °C (70 °F).
Watch for
Aphids, whiteflies, spider mites and caterpillars; powdery mildew and root rot.
Pets and people
We did not find an ASPCA entry, and NC State gives no pet rating, so pet safety is not confirmed.
General gardening information, not professional advice. Plant toxicity details are a starting point, not veterinary or medical advice: if a pet or child may have eaten a plant, contact a veterinarian or doctor promptly.
Care level: NC State’s maintenance rating (Medium). Pot band and summary wording are ours, based on the sources below.
