Light and position
Full sun: 6 or more hours of direct sun.
Size and pot
NC State lists 1.25 to 2 feet; for leaves, it is cut young. Leafy crops need containers 6 to 8 inches deep. Our pot band: small pot (up to about 5 litres).
Watering
Water when the top of the mix dries; NC State says it does not do well in wet soil.
Potting mix and feeding
Well-drained mix.
Growing through the year
NC State gives an ideal temperature range of 45 to 80 °F (about 7 to 27 °C). The leaves are used as a herb and the seeds as a spice.
Watch for
Charcoal rot and bacterial disease; tobacco cutworm caterpillars (Spodoptera litura).
Pets and people
We did not find an ASPCA entry, and NC State gives no pet rating, so pet safety is not confirmed.
General gardening information, not professional advice. Plant toxicity details are a starting point, not veterinary or medical advice: if a pet or child may have eaten a plant, contact a veterinarian or doctor promptly.
Care level: NC State’s maintenance rating (Medium). Pot band and summary wording are ours, based on the sources below.
