Light and position
Full sun, with light afternoon shade preferred; it dislikes full shade.
Size and pot
NC State lists 1 to 4 feet; dwarf types stay smaller. Our pot band: medium pot (about 5 to 15 litres).
Watering
Prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil but tolerates dry spells.
Potting mix and feeding
Well-drained mix. Pinch young stems to make plants bushy.
Growing through the year
A tender annual that tolerates heat. Deadhead promptly: heavy old flower heads can snap stems.
Grown for one season: sow or plant it once the weather is warm and frost-free.
Watch for
Powdery mildew, botrytis and rots; thrips and spider mites. Sap plus sunlight can irritate skin.
Pets and people
We did not find an ASPCA entry for Tagetes. NC State lists only human skin and eye irritation, so pet safety is not confirmed.
General gardening information, not professional advice. Plant toxicity details are a starting point, not veterinary or medical advice: if a pet or child may have eaten a plant, contact a veterinarian or doctor promptly.
Care level: NC State’s maintenance rating (Low). Pot band and summary wording are ours, based on the sources below.
